Private Message Usage Guide

Private messaging supports one-on-one communication with other users on AtomGit. You can send text, images, as well as links to repositories, files, Issues, and PRs.

1. Starting a Chat

  1. Log in to AtomGit, click on "Messages" in the left navigation sidebar, and select the "Private Messages" category.
  2. In the conversation list, click "Start Private Message" (pencil icon), enter the user's display name or username, and type at least 2 characters.
  3. Select the user, compose your message, and click the Send button or press Enter to send; press Shift + Enter to insert a new line.

Alternatively, you can click "Send Private Message" from the user's profile page, or select a user in the "Contacts" category and click "Send Private Message". Existing conversations can be opened directly from the conversation list.

Sending private messages requires meeting account eligibility criteria: currently supported for Growth Level 1, 2, and 3 with a growth value greater than 0. Messages cannot be sent if the account is restricted or if there is a block relationship between both parties. Specific reasons will be displayed above the input box.

Text

Each message supports up to 5,000 characters. Messages containing only spaces or line breaks cannot be sent.

Images

Click the image button in the input area, or paste/drag images directly. Supported formats are PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP, with a single file size limit of 20 MiB. After selecting an image, review it in the preview window and send; images in chat can be clicked to view the original.

Images are sent separately. If you send only an image, it will be posted alone; any unsent text and attached resources will remain as drafts and need to be sent again.

Click the "+" button in the input area to select a repository, a file or directory within a repository, an Issue, or a PR. Added links can be removed before sending, or sent together with text or separately.

Sending a link does not grant access permissions. The recipient must already have appropriate access rights to open restricted content such as private repositories.

Drafts

Switching conversations or navigating to group chats and returning will preserve unsent content. Drafts will not be preserved after refreshing the page, closing the tab, or logging out, nor will they sync across devices.

3. Viewing and Replying to Messages

The conversation list displays unread counts. Click "Unread" to filter for unread conversations. The list search box allows you to find loaded conversations by the other party's display name; if not found, click "Load More" or search for the user via "Start Private Message".

Once a conversation is opened, you can:

  • View history: Scroll up to read older messages, click "Load earlier messages" to continue, or click "New messages arrived" to jump back to the latest.
  • Quote reply: Hover over a text message, select "Quote", then type your reply and send.
  • Copy text: Hover over a text message, select "Copy".

Messages you send will show their delivery status:

StatusMeaning & Action
SendingCurrently sending. Please wait. If it remains unchanged for a long time, check your network and page connection status.
SentThe message has been successfully sent. This does not imply it has been read.
ReadThe recipient has read the message.
Send FailedFollow the failure prompt instructions, then retry sending. Edit and resend if content needs changes.
Awaiting ConfirmationDelivery status is temporarily unavailable. Please click "Confirm & Retry" instead of directly resending to avoid duplicates.

4. Sending Limits

To reduce harassment, the following daily quotas apply when sending private messages to users you do not follow mutually, nor have a two-way conversation history with:

Limit ScopeDaily Quota
To a single userGrowth Level 1, 2, and 3: 3, 5, and 10 messages respectively
Across all such usersTotal of 20 messages

Once both parties follow each other, or after a message has been successfully sent in both directions, that conversation will no longer be subject to the above two quota limits. All private messages remain subject to an overall limit of 1,000 messages per user per day, and overly frequent sending may result in temporary restrictions.

Only successfully sent messages consume the daily quota, which resets at midnight Beijing Time daily. When fewer than 3 messages remain or the quota is exhausted, a notice will appear above the input box.

Private message content undergoes platform review. If rejected, please modify the content and resend; repeated rejections may lead to temporary restrictions. If your account faces other private message limitations, follow the on-screen prompts.

5. Blocking and Reporting

Blocking and Unblocking

Click "Block" in the top-right corner of the conversation. After blocking, neither party can send private messages to each other. Historical messages and follow relationships remain unaffected.

To unblock, click "Unblock" in the current conversation, or open the "Blacklist" from the conversation list toolbar, find the user, and remove them. If the other party also blocked you, the chat can only resume after they unblock you.

Reporting a Message

  1. Hover over the received message and select "Report".
  2. Specify the reason for reporting, and add details if necessary.
  3. Click "Submit Report".

Reports target individual selected messages. The platform will retain the message content for verification and handling. "Report Accepted" indicates successful submission, not a final ruling of violation. Resolution results will not be displayed directly in the chat.

In case of harassment, you can report and block simultaneously. For incidents involving fraud, personal threats, etc., please keep screenshots and contact the platform through in-site feedback or official customer service channels.

Do not send sensitive information such as passwords, verification codes, or Tokens via private messages. If you receive messages requesting account credentials, verify them through official channels.

6. Frequently Asked Questions

Cannot find a specific user?

Ensure you are entering a display name or username with at least 2 characters. "Start Private Message" does not support searching by User ID. Accounts with enhanced privacy settings enabled will not appear in search results.

Unable to send an image?

Check if the format and size meet the requirements. If the image is empty, corrupted, or too large, re-export or resize it and try again. While it is being read or uploaded, please wait for the process to complete.

After switching devices, are chat records and drafts still available?

Historical messages can be viewed after logging into the same account. Unsent drafts will not sync across devices and will not persist after refreshing the page.

Still unresolved?

Contact the platform through the in-site feedback channel, providing the operation time, the other user's username, on-screen prompts, or screenshots. Please redact unrelated private information before submitting screenshots.
